To balance or not to balance?

Balance seems like a curse word these days for moms. Everyone is telling us that it’s something we can’t attain so throw the word out because it’s useless. You literally can not balance every area of your life perfectly. It’s like trying to hold 10 spinning plates at one time, not happening. Well, unless you are extremely gifted.

I’ve struggled for years to figure out how to balance my life. How do I do all the things I want to do that make me feel fulfilled? How do I eat healthy, workout, maintain beautiful hair and have moisturized flawless skin. How do I cook meals every night, read my favorite books, have time for God, friends, be a great wife and mother?  All these things feel so important to me. I dream of the day when all this will be possible. It’s clear that I’m an idealist and a slight perfectionist. All this stuff is not going to happen now. At least not while I have a toddler and more children on the way at some point. Most of these things can be more easily attained once my children are off to college and I’m an empty nester.

I’ve had to shift my mind from being an idealist to a realist. I’ve had to figure out realistically what I can do. What is humanly possible? What is currently most important to me that I absolutely need to do for my family and myself. I must say, figuring this out is like learning to dance. You just keep discovering what to do one step at a time. You make adjustment as you try things out. You see what works and what doesn’t.

So here’s the kicker, balance isn’t about us being super strong and maintaining every area of our lives perfectly. Balance really begins with God as our center. He is our balance, our stability. I’m reminded of this verse:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:15

We can literally do no good thing without God.  Ultimately, balance begins with true devotions to God first. As we put him first, he’ll give us the strength, energy and wisdom to navigate all areas of our lives.

“ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
